Pinkham Notch, NH—The Mt. Washington Auto Road is now open to the summit for private vehicles. The entire 7.6-mile route to the summit of the Northeast’s highest peak is now clear of snow and ice.
After opening its 149th season on May 1, the Road Crew has worked diligently to clear the snow and ice from the Auto Road. In most seasons, the goal is to reach the summit by Memorial Day weekend, but warm spring weather has helped move that date forward. However, on any given day on Mt. Washington, winter weather may resume, and guests may still find winter-like conditions near the summit, including snow and rime ice.
Regular rates and vehicle restrictions apply. Guided tours are not available at this time.
First opened in 1861, the Mt. Washington Auto Road is America’s oldest manmade attraction. At nearly 8 miles long, it stretches to the summit of Mt. Washington at 6,288 feet, the highest peak in the Northeast
The Mt. Washington Auto Road will be open daily from 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., weather permitting. For the latest updates on Road conditions, visit www.MtWashingtonAutoRoad.com or call 603.446.3988.

First opened in 1861 as the Mt. Washington Carriage Road, the Mt. Washington Auto Road is the country’s oldest manmade attraction. Located on Rt. 16 in Pinkham Notch, New Hampshire, just north of the Mount Washington Valley and minutes south of Gorham, the Auto Road has a long and winding history, much like its 7.6 mile trip up to the summit of the highest peak in the Northeast.
