Holderness, NH: The Squam Lakes Natural Science Center is now accepting registrations for its hugely popular summer Guided Discoveries series. These week-long outdoor adventures in learning for children ages 4 – 13 begin on June 21 and run through August 13. Parents are encouraged to sign up soon, as some sessions are already full.

Guided Discovery Sessions:
All Grown Up (for ages 4-5)
June 21-25, 1:30 p.m.- 3:30 p.m.
From tadpole to frog and seed to tree, participants will explore and observe the different ways living things grow. Travel to ponds and through forests in search of plants and animals in all life stages.
Cost: $110/member; $130/non-member.
Nature Explorers (for age 4 only)
Session I. -- June 28-July 2, 9:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m.
Session II. -- July 12-16, 9:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m.
Session III. -- August 2-6, 9:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m.
These adventures will introduce your child to the natural world and its wonders. Through a variety of both indoor and outdoor activities they will explore, discover, and learn together!

Nature Sense (for age 5 only)
Session I. -- June 28-July 2, 1:30 p.m.-3:30 p.m.
Session II. -- July 26-30, 9:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m.

Explore New Hampshire’s summer environment with a focus on each of the five senses. Smell, taste, touch, see, and hear your way through a week full of fun!

Wild About Art (for ages 7-10)
Session I. -- June 28-July 2, 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.
Session II. -- August 9-13, 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.
Explore the exciting territory where art and science overlap! Children will discover the rich variety of plant and animal life at the Science Center under the guidance of a Currier Museum Art Center instructor and Science Center staff. Create in two dimensions using watercolor and tempera paint, and in three-dimensional media such as wire, clay, paper mache, and plaster.
Cost: $240/member; $260/non-member.
Fabulous Flyers (for ages 5-6)
July 5-9 9:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m.
What makes a bird a bird? How do they fly? Learn together about these amazing creatures!

Fantastic Forests (for ages 7-8)
Session I. -- July 5-9, 1:30 p.m.-3:30 p.m.
Session II. -- August 2-6, 1:30 p.m.-3:30 p.m.
Learn about relationships among organisms – they are not always simple and harmonious, and at times are knock down, drag-out battles for supremacy. Whether it involves succession and competition among plants or predator and prey, the natural world is a wild place. Take a peek at the BioBattle!

Be A Survivor (for ages 10-13)
This session is FULL, but the Science Center can add you to the waiting list
July 19-23, 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.
Would you be able to survive if you were lost in the woods? Would you like to know the wilderness more deeply? Learn how to be prepared, how to build survival shelters, and how to navigate the forest. Master the ancient arts of fire building, silent movement, and animal tracking. With these skills, you will learn to feel at home in the forest.

How Does Your Garden Grow? (for ages 6-8)
July 12-16, 9:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m.
Through adventures in the Science Center gardens and at Longhaul Farm, learn all the good things to know to make gardens grow!

Incredible Insects (for ages 6-8)

From fish to turtles to owls to skunks, New Hampshire is filled with amazing wildlife. Discover what makes these animals the same and what makes them different!

Science Sleuths (for ages 8-10)

Every day is a mystery when you are a scientist! Come solve a daily science mystery and unravel the puzzles of nature.

Critter Theatre (for ages 6-7)

Join the Science Center for a week of fun with a theatrical twist! Participants will meet live animals close-up and then take to the Little Church Theater stage to create a “natural world” play from what they learn! The course will be held jointly at the Science Center and the Little Church Theater. Participants are encouraged to bring their families to see the environmental theater finale on Friday.

Round and Round (for ages 8-9)
Session I. -- July 26-30, 1:30 p.m.-3:30 p.m.
From life cycles to seasons, the world goes round and round. Explore natural cycles through stories, outdoor explorations, games, and activities.

GeoCamp (for ages 9-12)
July 5-9, 9:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m.
The Lakes Region has not always had lakes! Learn how our lakes and mountains were created by volcanoes, glaciers, and time. Travel to a mine, cruise Squam Lake, and even scale an extinct volcano. Lots of fun, hands-on activities – make fossils, play-dough volcanoes, topographic maps, and even ice cream magma!

Creatures of the Night (for ages 7-9)
July 12-16, 9:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m.
Bedtime can be a very wild time in the natural world. We will examine the amazing lives of our nocturnal neighbors and explore their mysterious “daily” routines.

Sky Hunters (for ages 7-8)
July 19-23, 1:30 p.m.-3:30 p.m.
Investigate the world of flying predators through stories, nature viewing, and visits with live owls, hawks, and falcons. Learn about raptor adaptations and the natural communities where raptors live. Meet some other airborne predators too.

Natural Adventures-Single Day Series
Minds in Motion (for ages 3 and under)
Wednesdays: June 2, July 7, August 4, September 1, 9:30 a.m.-10:30 a.m.
The mind and body of a young child are constantly on the move. Foster your child’s “natural curiosity” and explore motion from an animal’s perspective – jump like a frog, swim like a fish, crawl like a caterpillar, and fly like a bird. Shared experiences you have with your child will build foundations for a lifetime.
Cost: $5/member child; $7/non-member child.

The mission of Squam Lakes Natural Science Center (SLNSC) is to advance understanding of ecology by exploring New Hampshire’s natural world. Through spectacular live animal exhibits, natural science education programs, and lake cruises, the Science Center has educated and enlightened visitors for more than forty years about the importance of our natural world. Squam Lakes Natural Science Center is located on Route 113 in Holderness, an easy drive from exit 24 off I-93, and is open daily from May 1 through November 1.
